How to Rank in the Google Map Pack: Contractor's Guide

The Google Map Pack is the 3 local business results customers see first. Own it, and you own the calls. Here's exactly how.

What the Google Map Pack Is (and Why It Matters)

The Google Map Pack is the local 3-pack, the three business results that appear at the top of Google when someone searches your trade plus location. "Roofer near me." "Emergency plumber." "HVAC contractor." Those three map pins and business cards you see first, that's the 3-pack.

88% of local mobile searches end in the top 3 results. If you're outside the 3-pack, you're invisible. Inside it, you're where the calls are.

Google ranks these three results on three factors: Proximity, Relevance, and Prominence. Proximity means how close you are to the search location. Relevance means how well your business profile matches what they searched for. Prominence means your local authority, reviews, and citation strength. You control two of those. You can't move your shop, but you can dominate Relevance and Prominence.

Step 1: Claim and Optimize Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the first gate. If it's incomplete, unclaimed, or wrong, you don't rank in the Map Pack at all.

Go to google.com/business. Search your business name. Claim it. Verify ownership (Google will send a postcard or let you verify by phone). Then fill it in completely, every field.

  • Business name, address, phone (exact and consistent across the web)
  • Service areas if you're service-based (plumbing, roofing, HVAC)
  • Hours (accurate, with any seasonal changes)
  • Business categories (pick the one that matches your trade, not "marketing consultant")
  • Description (50-150 words, customer-focused, include what you do and service area)
  • Photos (10-15 of your work, crew, trucks, finished jobs, not stock images)
  • Logo and cover photo

Relevance starts here. The more complete your profile, the more signals you send Google that you're a real, trustworthy business in your category.

Step 2: Build Local Relevance with Citations and NAP Consistency

Google looks for your business name, address, and phone (NAP) mentioned across the web. Each mention is a citation. Each consistent mention tells Google you're real.

Start with the big directories: Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook, Angi (formerly Angie's List), Better Business Bureau, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack. If you're a plumber, electrician, or HVAC contractor, these matter more. Add your business to 5-10 relevant directories with identical NAP information.

This does two things. First, it builds relevance for your trade. Second, it proves your address and phone are consistent across the web, which Google uses as a trust signal.

Don't get fancy. Consistency beats comprehensiveness. If you list yourself in 50 places with different phone formats, that hurts more than it helps.

Step 3: Generate Real Google Reviews (Lots of Them)

Reviews are the second pillar of Prominence. Google's algorithm weights fresh, consistent reviews heavily. Contractors with more reviews rank higher in the local 3-pack.

After every job, ask customers to leave a Google review. That's it. You don't need 100 reviews tomorrow. You need 2-3 new ones a month, consistently.

The math: A contractor running an automated review engine sees roughly 47 new Google reviews a year. That's 4 per month. Over 3 years, that's 140 reviews. A competitor with 5 reviews total won't touch you.

Don't fake reviews. Google catches them. Ask real customers. Some will say no. Most who will say yes need a simple text or email asking them to spend 60 seconds on Google.

If you're doing this alone, it's grinding and gets missed. JR Grow's review engine handles it on autopilot, every customer, every time, no spam. But if you're starting, a text or email after the job works.

Step 4: Get Your Website Ranked (It Helps the Map Pack)

Your Google Business Profile is separate from your website, but they talk to each other. A strong, fast website with local keyword content on it boosts your Map Pack ranking.

Your site needs to: Load in under 2 seconds (most contractor sites are 6-8 seconds, which kills ranking). Include your business name, address, and phone in your header or footer on every page. Have a local keyword-rich page or section (e.g., "Roofing Services in [Your City]"). Have at least one page that mentions your service area towns.

You don't need 50 pages. A home page, an about page, a services page (with local city names), and a contact page is enough to start. Mobile-first design is mandatory now, not optional.

If you have a poor website or no website, this is the one thing worth fixing before anything else. A slow, broken website will keep you out of the 3-pack no matter how many reviews you have.

Step 5: Understand the Geo-Grid (Ranking Is Different on Every Street Corner)

This is the part most contractors don't know. You don't have one ranking in the Google Map Pack. You have dozens.

Google ranks local businesses on a geo-grid, meaning the Map Pack results change based on where the search is happening. A search for "roofer" from the south side of town might show different businesses in the top 3 than a search from downtown.

This matters because it means your goal isn't to own one ranking. It's to be visible and strong enough that you show up in the top 3 across your entire service area.

The only way to know if you're winning is to search from different locations. Search "your trade + your town" from different addresses. Check Google Maps directly. Are you in the top 3 from your office? From your customer's neighborhood? From the edge of town?

If you're in the top 3 everywhere, you own the local market. If you're in and out, you need to keep building Prominence (reviews) and Relevance (consistency, keywords).

When This Isn't Enough (and What Actually Works)

If you do all of the above and you're still not ranking in 3 months, a few things might be wrong.

First, you might be too new. Google takes time to trust new businesses. If you've been open less than 6 months, your profile might need 30-60 days just to show up at all.

Second, your market might be competitive. If you're a plumber in a city with 200 licensed plumbers, the top 3 will have 300+ reviews and 20+ years of history. You can still get there, but it takes consistent effort over 6-12 months, not 6 weeks.

Third, you might have made mistakes. Your address might be wrong on your website. Your phone might be formatted differently on different platforms. Your category might be set to the wrong trade. These aren't quick fixes, but they are fixable.

The fastest way to fix all of this is to have someone managing it, not you. JR Grow runs Google Business Profile optimization as a standalone service, which includes ongoing profile management, review generation, and local keyword tracking. Most contractors see roughly 3.5x more calls after 90 days. But if you're doing it solo, give yourself 6 months and be consistent.

The Real Payoff: More Calls, Not More Stress

Owning the Google Map Pack means customers find you first. It means the phone rings. It means you're not bidding against 10 other contractors every job. It means 67% of callers who would call the next guy if you miss the call now text you back in 30 seconds instead, because you have a system for it.

A typical contractor in a trade market sees about 3.5x more calls after 90 days of solid Google Business Profile optimization. That's not a lead generation funnel promise. That's consistent optimization of the one place customers actually look when they need you.

This takes work if you're doing it alone. It's a few hours a month. But it compounds. After 6 months, it's hard to break you out of that top 3. After a year, you own it.

If you want it done right and on time, JR Grow is built for exactly this. Four engines: a fast website, missed-call text-back recovery, Google Business Profile optimization, and automated review generation, all on one dashboard. One flat price, no contract, live in 7-10 days. But if you're starting solo, start with the checklist above. It works.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank in the Google Map Pack?

If your profile is new, 30-60 days just to show up. If you're already listed but buried, 90 days of consistent effort (reviews, profile optimization, citations) to see real movement. Competitive markets take longer, 6-12 months to own the top 3. Speed depends on Prominence (reviews) and Relevance (consistency).

Do I need a website to rank in the Google Map Pack?

No, your Google Business Profile can rank on its own. But a strong, fast website with local keywords boosts your ranking weight significantly. If you have no website, prioritize one before worrying about Map Pack optimization.

What if I have only a few reviews? Can I still rank?

Yes, but it's harder. Google weights Prominence heavily, so competitors with 100+ reviews will outrank you if all else is equal. Start collecting reviews from every customer now. Consistency matters more than volume. 2-3 per month adds up fast.

Does my physical address affect map pack ranking?

Yes, Proximity is one of three factors Google uses. You can't move your business, but it's less important than Relevance and Prominence. A business on the edge of town with 200 reviews can outrank a business downtown with 10.

How do I know if I'm actually ranking in the Google Map Pack?

Search your trade plus your town on Google from different locations (downtown, your neighborhood, edge of town). Check Google Maps directly. If you see yourself in the top 3 map results, you're in. If you're below the 3-pack, you're not ranking yet.
